Welcome to Day 21. for one of our short powerful devotions from the 30 Bible Verses About God's Amazing Grace, bible reading plan. This short devotional is based on James 4:6.
Read James 4:6.
But He gives us more and more grace (power of the Holy Spirit, to meet this evil tendency and all others fully). That is why He says, God sets Himself against the proud and haughty, but gives grace [continually] to the lowly (those who are humble enough to receive it).
James 4:6 meaning
James is reprimanding the Christians. It seems that they were not living a godly life. They were quarreling, committing adultery, living in lust, greed, and envy. They were denying the Holy Spirit that was living inside them and embracing the sinful practices that the world could offer them. You can read more about this in James 4:1-5.
James is trying to convey to them a better way. He is trying to express the amazing grace that God has made available to us, His greater grace, God's grace upon grace upon grace for every situation so that we can live a rich and grace-filled and thriving life.
Join me as we unpack James 4:6 in a short devotional below.
God Gives Grace To The Humble: Devotional
What does it mean that God gives grace to the humble?
We can never exhaust God’s grace. He has an unending measure of grace to give to us. It is God's nature to give. When we are weak, that is when God longs to pour out more and more of His grace but we need to come before Him in a humble manner. We need to come boldly and humbly before God's throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16) and ask for His forgiveness, to acknowledge that we are too weak to resist the temptations before us, and then to accept His grace to face the different temptations and circumstances that we find ourselves in.
We all as human beings naturally have evil tendencies but James 4:6 teaches us that God will give us more and more grace to deal with the temptations that crop up in our daily lives that try to keep us off the path that God wants us on.
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
We need God's grace to walk in this world but to not be 'of this world'. The first step in obtaining God's grace is to be humble and give up being proud, thinking that you can achieve everything in your own strength.
It is impossible to get into a circumstance where our need for grace is greater than God’s supply.
Oh, the peace that comes deep down into your soul when you realize that on your own, you don't have the strength to resist that temptation that faces you constantly. But in time with God's grace, His abundant grace, you can do what God calls you to do. You can live a godly life.
God's grace can only produce in you a godly life.
God gives you grace to hold your tongue when you are in a difficult conversation and you really want to say something in your defense but you know it could have damaging repercussions.
God gives you His grace upon grace to extend His grace to other people that you meet constantly in our graceless world.
God gives you His grace to work in a difficult situation.
God gives you His grace to walk through all the changing situations that you will be in throughout your time in this world.
