The Book of Exodus isn’t just a story about the Israelites leaving Egypt.

Most people think Exodus is about escape, a dramatic rescue, a sea split in two, or that Pharaoh was defeated.

But Exodus is not mainly about Israel leaving Egypt.

It’s about God getting Egypt out of Israel.

It’s also about what happens after you’ve been rescued—when you’re free on the outside, but still fearful, bitter, impatient, and tempted to build golden calves when God feels slow in delivering you into your 'Promised Land'.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re saved… but still struggling, Exodus will feel uncomfortably familiar in the best way!

Because Exodus is a book for the in-between seasons:

  • When you’ve left what harmed you

  • But you haven’t yet learned how to live free

  • When God’s timing feels slow

  • And your faith is being rebuilt one day at a time

The Book of Exodus is where God forms a people and builds a passion for His presence.

And it might be where He forms you, too, with a wonderful passion for Him.

What Exodus Is Really About

Exodus begins with bondage—Israel crushed under Pharaoh’s power.

And it ends with something even more shocking than the Red Sea:

God moves in.

At the end of Exodus, God makes His presence known in a visible, powerful way, and the tabernacle becomes the place where He chooses to dwell among His people.

“The glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” (Exodus 40:34)

That’s the whole point. Not just rescue from slavery—but a relationship with God’s presence.

Exodus is the story of a God who:

  • hears cries

  • breaks chains

  • judges evil

  • provides in wilderness places

  • corrects drifting hearts

  • and chooses to dwell with His people even after they were badly behaved and turned their back on Him a few times!

This is not a distant God. This is a God who wants to come close to His people.

If I’m honest, the hardest parts of Exodus aren’t Pharaoh or the plagues.

It’s the wilderness.

Because the wilderness exposes what’s in us.

It exposes:

  • the fear that wants control

  • the impatience that can’t wait

  • the grumbling that forgets yesterday’s miracles

  • the heart that wants a visible god when the real God feels silent

Israel’s story isn’t written to shame us. It’s real history that shows what God was doing as He carried out His plan of redemption. And it also shows us our own hearts—so we can learn to trust God in the middle of real life, especially in wilderness seasons.

Exodus teaches you that faith isn’t proven at the Red Sea. It’s proven three days later when the water is bitter, and you’re thirsty. It’s proven when manna can’t be hoarded. It’s proven when God offers His presence, and you realize you can’t live without it.

That’s exactly what we’ll walk through together in the Exodus Bible Study Guide, one chapter at a time. You can get it as:

The Pattern You’ll See Again and Again

If you read Exodus slowly, you’ll notice a repeated pattern:

  1. God delivers

  2. The people panic

  3. God provides

  4. The people drift

  5. God corrects

  6. God draws them near again

That pattern isn’t only Israel’s story. Its also ours. It reminds us that God stays faithful, even when we don’t.

The Moment That Changes Everything

There’s a sentence in Exodus that defines the entire book:

“If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)

Moses isn’t asking for comfort.

He’s asking for God Himself.

That’s the turning point in Exodus—and it becomes the turning point in us when we stop wanting God’s gifts more than God’s presence.

If that verse grips you, I unpack it more deeply in my book The Presence of God, where we talk about what it looks like to live with God’s presence in everyday life.

Why Reading Exodus Can Feel Hard (And Why It’s Worth It)

Let’s be real: some parts of Exodus can feel confusing.

  • Why so many laws?

  • What’s with the tabernacle measurements?

  • Why the detailed priest garments?

They are there because God is teaching His people something life-changing:

God is holy, so we treat Him with respect. And we can only come close because God makes the way.

When you understand the why, Exodus becomes stunning instead of strange.

If You’ve Been Wanting to Study Exodus, But Didn’t Know How…

This is exactly why I created Exodus Chapter by Chapter.

Not to overwhelm you with commentary. But to help you open your Bible and actually understand what you’re reading—with context, clarity, and real-life application.

Each chapter includes:

  • a concise summary (so you know what’s happening)

  • key themes (so you see what matters)

  • what it teaches about God (so your heart is anchored)

  • what it teaches about you (so your faith becomes practical)

  • application (so it changes your everyday life)

  • a prayer prompt (so you respond, not just read)

  • “Understanding This Chapter” explanations (so the confusing parts become clear)

  • Review and group discussion questions every 5 chapters (perfect for small groups)

If you’ve ever opened Exodus and thought, I want to get this… but I’m not sure I do, this is for you.

If you’re in a wilderness season, Exodus will strengthen you.

If you’ve been drifting, Exodus will wake you up.

If you’re hungry for God’s presence, Exodus will pull you closer and closer to Him.
