How Does God Reveal Himself To Us?

Have you ever whispered, “God, where are You?” Maybe it was in the middle of a storm, a moment of joy, or while searching for answers in the quiet of your heart.

The truth is—God is not distant or silent. He longs to be known. He reveals Himself not only through mighty miracles or ancient stories, but in deeply personal and present ways today.

I love that I get to write about God every single day. This topic—How does God reveal Himself to us?—is especially close to my heart.

God has revealed Himself to me many times, often in the middle of life’s challenges—both the beautiful and the difficult. I’m not even sure why I believed in Him from such a young age (though I know my granny faithfully prayed for me), but I thank God that He made Himself known to me early on.

As a young adult, I faced some major life decisions—ones that would shape my future. I had no money, no stability, and no option but to lean into God and trust that He is who He says He is in the Bible.

Looking back, I’m in awe of how He’s intervened in my life. It hasn’t always been easy, but God has walked closely with me through it all. I’ve learned to listen for the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit—and that’s how I found myself here, writing Bible study devotionals for Scriptural Grace.

In fact, following those quiet nudges is how I accidentally wrote a book about the Names of God—just published on Amazon and also available in our digital shop!

By the way, Scriptural Grace offers many more Bible studies, devotionals, and prayer resources to help you grow in your walk with God. How Does God Reveal Himself To Us?

One of the most beautiful truths in Scripture is this: God reveals Himself through His character. And we see His character most clearly in the names He uses to describe Himself—names like Yahweh Yireh (The Lord Will Provide), El Roi (The God Who Sees Me), and Yahweh Shalom (The Lord is Peace). Each name tells a story of who He is and how He desires to meet us right where we are.

In this post, How Does God Reveal Himself to Us?, we’ll explore the beautiful and powerful ways He makes Himself known.

  1. Through His Names that declare His nature and invite us to trust Him more deeply

  2. Through His Word, which is living, active, and designed to draw us closer

  3. Through the Holy Spirit, who guides and comforts us in real-time

  4. Through Jesus, the perfect image of the Father

  5. And through our everyday lives, where God shows up in ways we often overlook

If you’ve been longing to know God more personally or wondering how to recognize His voice, this post is for you. I’ll also link to my favorite Bible studies and devotionals that go deeper into each of these ways God reveals Himself—especially my Names of God devotional bible study, which has helped so many women (and men!) understand and experience God’s character in powerful ways.

So let’s begin this beautiful journey together—because God is not hiding. He is revealing. And He wants you to know Him.

How God reveals Himself to us

how god reveals himself to us, 5 ways blog post

1. God Reveals Himself Through His Names

One of the most powerful ways God reveals Himself is through His names. Each name in Scripture is more than just a title—it’s a glimpse into His heart, His character, and His faithfulness.

In the Old Testament, when people encountered God in a personal way, they often gave Him a name based on that experience. These names tell us not just who God is in general, but who He wants to be in your life.

  • When Abraham needed provision, God revealed Himself as Yahweh YirehThe Lord Will Provide (Genesis 22:14).

  • When Hagar felt unseen and alone in the wilderness, God met her there and she called Him El RoiThe God Who Sees Me (Genesis 16:13).

  • When Gideon was afraid, God showed Himself as Yahweh ShalomThe Lord is Peace (Judges 6:24).

Each name is like a divine invitation—God saying, “This is who I am. Will you trust Me?”

And He hasn’t changed. The same God who provided for Abraham, saw Hagar, and calmed Gideon’s fears is still revealing Himself to you and me today. When you know His names, you begin to recognize His work in your life more clearly.

💡Which name of God do you need to cling to today? Is it Provider, Peace, Healer, or Shepherd? or another of His powerful Names - Here is a list that will encourage you.

 2. God Reveals Himself Through His Word

If you want to hear God speak, open your Bible.

Scripture is the clearest, most consistent way God reveals Himself to us. It’s not just an old collection of writings—it’s living, active, and deeply personal. Through the pages of His Word, God reveals His heart, His promises, and His plans for His people.

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son...”Hebrews 1:1–2a (NIV)

Every time you open the Bible, you are encountering the voice of the God who made you, sees you, and loves you. From Genesis to Revelation, God is unveiling who He is—and how He is working all things together to redeem, restore, and draw us closer to Him.

Want to know if God is faithful?→ Read about His covenant with Abraham.

Want to know if God sees your pain?→ Read the Psalms.

Want to understand God’s heart?→ Look at how Jesus treats the broken, the proud, and the forgotten in the Gospels.

When you begin reading the Bible with the desire to know God—not just gather information—you will begin to see His character everywhere.

What have you been asking God to show you lately? Open your Bible and invite Him to speak into that very place.

  1. God Reveals Himself Through the Holy Spirit

God not only speaks through His Word—He dwells within His people. Through the Holy Spirit, God makes Himself personally known, guiding us, comforting us, and helping us understand His truth.

“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God… we have received the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.”1 Corinthians 2:10,12 (NIV)

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach us, remind us of His words, and lead us into all truth (John 14:26). That means we are never alone in trying to understand God’s will or recognize His presence.

The Holy Spirit reveals God's character to us in real-time—through conviction, peace, nudges, and comfort when we need it most.

You may not hear an audible voice, but you might feel a prompting in prayer, a fresh understanding while reading Scripture, or an overwhelming sense of peace in chaos. That’s the Spirit revealing God's nearness and wisdom.

When you tune your heart to the Holy Spirit, you begin to recognize when God is speaking—and how He is lovingly leading you.

  1. God Reveals Himself Through Jesus Christ

If you’ve ever wondered what God is really like—look at Jesus.

Jesus Christ is the fullest and clearest revelation of God to the world. He is not just a messenger; He is God in the flesh, walking among us, speaking with us, touching the broken, and showing us the Father’s heart in every word and action.

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being...”Hebrews 1:3a (NIV)

When Jesus healed the sick, we saw God’s compassion. When He welcomed sinners, we saw God’s mercy. When He wept at a friend’s grave, we saw God’s tender heart. And when He died and rose again, we saw the depths of God’s love and the power of His redemption.

To know Jesus is to know God.

Through the Gospels, we witness God's character in action—His truth, grace, justice, and love perfectly displayed. And even now, Jesus continues to reveal God to us as our Savior, Intercessor, and King.

  1. God Reveals Himself Through Everyday Life and Personal Encounters

God is not limited to mountaintop moments or Sunday mornings. He reveals Himself in the quiet and the ordinary, the chaos and the calm—right in the middle of real life.

“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

From the burning bush that caught Moses’ attention (Exodus 3), to the still small voice that met Elijah in his weariness (1 Kings 19), Scripture shows us that God often meets us where we least expect Him—when we’re listening.

And the same is true for us today.

Sometimes, God uses people—a friend’s encouragement, a sermon, or even a child’s simple question. At other times, He uses circumstances—a door that opens or a season of waiting — to draw us closer. Often, He reveals Himself through worship, prayer, a Scripture that jumps off the page, or a deep peace that makes no sense except for His presence.

But here’s the key: We have to look for Him.

When we begin to expect God to reveal Himself in the details of our lives, we start to recognize His fingerprints everywhere.

Where have you seen God at work recently—even in small, unexpected ways?
