God's unconditional Love
First things first, the Bible teaches that God's love for humanity is indeed unconditional.
Can you imagine that?
A love that is not based on our actions or circumstances, a love that is just there, always present, and always ready to embrace us.
And the best part is that God's unconditional love is freely given to all of us.
How amazing is that?
Let's take a look at 28 Bible verses about the unconditional love of God.

Verses about God's love for us
Top tip: All verses below are in the ESV translation. Click on the underlined verse to choose to read it in various translations on the Bible Gateway platform.
1. Romans 5:8: God loves us even when we were still sinners
"but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
In our devotional Bible study we discuss how before we were lovable, God loved us. Before we came to know God, He loved us. He loved us then, He loves us now and He will always love us!
God created us to have a relationship with Him. Each of us has a 'God-shaped' hole in our hearts that only He can fill. But God is holy and it is impossible to come into His presence full of sin. That is why God sent Jesus to the cross to redeem us from our sins and bridge the gap between our sins and the holiness of God.
2. John 3:16: God loves you greatly
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
God loves you greatly! My study Bible says that God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He gave up His unique Son so that whoever believes (trusts in, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
Which words jumped out to you when you read them right now?
For me 'greatly loved' and dearly prized' did. Wow! I'm really special to be prized so highly. But that also means that you are too!
3. 1 John 4:19: God loved you first
"We love because he first loved us."
God loved you first! That is a proven, written fact. Because the Bible says so!
Here is what I like to call a truth bomb- The love contract that God has signed for us was signed with the blood of Jesus on a wooden cross over 2000 years ago. God loved you first. He loves you sacrificially and He loves you personally.
4. Matthew 22:37-39: Love God love people
"And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.38 This is the great and first commandment.39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
Love God, love people. Jesus says there are two things that are more valuable in life than anything else: loving God and loving people. Both of these commandments seem simple and clear but it takes compassion, obedience, grace, and mercy to carry them out! (We unpack this verse more in our Bible study book)
5. 1 Corinthians 13:13: God's love is the greatest gift
"So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
You probably know this verse very well! It is usually read during a wedding ceremony or on cards. But do you know the background of this verse? Do you know why Paul, the apostle wrote it?
In the previous chapter, Paul had been discussing the spiritual gifts with the Corinthian Christians. They were quite competitive. They wanted to know which spiritual gift was better than another, in order to establish some sort of superiority. They wanted to know who was more important or who should be considered more spiritual.
Paul is trying to convey to them that the gifts they have are all equally important but it is the matter of the heart that is behind the gift that is most important! They should be used in an attitude of love toward one another.
6. John 15:9-17: God's love produces good fruit in us
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.14 You are my friends if you do what I command.15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends since I have told you everything the Father told me.16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.17 This is my command: Love each other."
7. John 14:6: God in His love for us provided the way!
"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through me."
God in His love for us provided the way! Here is the perfect verse that settles the religious question of how to find God. We need to know Jesus intimately. He is the way, the only way to reach God.
8. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3: If you don't display God's love - you are a noisy gong!
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing."
God's love is supernatural!
The Greek word for love used in these verses is 'agape' which means a commitment of the will to cherish and uphold another person. This is the same love that God has for us.
God's love is supernatural. We can be full of this love and display it, but only once we have surrendered our lives to God.
Then you will see His fruit evident in your life due to the quality time that you spend in His presence. The more you get to know Jesus, the more changed you will be!
9. 1 John 4:16-18: God is love
"So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."
God's perfect love casts out fear!
These verses encapsulate the very essence of God. As you abide in Him, rest in Him, and practice His presence, you will become more assured of God's deep love for you.
10. John 10:10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
This is such a beautiful, important, and encouraging verse to memorize and hide in your heart. John 10:10 says that the thief comes only to kill and destroy. I came that you may have and enjoy life, a satisfying life, and abundant life!
Who is the thief?
It is satan. He is real and he intends to destroy whatever he can in your life and he intends to prevent you from walking in an abundant life.
Who came for you so that we can enjoy life in abundance?
The awesome answer is Jesus, your Shepherd! (We unpack this verse further in our Bible study book)
11. Hebrews 4:15-16: "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need".
God in His love for us gave us the perfect High Priest. Jesus understands our weaknesses. He too endured pain and despair during His time on earth. We are invited to boldly come to the throne of grace and receive mercy and grace in our time of need. We are invited not because we are perfect or without sin - that is impossible. But because Jesus is in His place at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest interceding on our behalf. He paid the debt of our sins on the cross.
12. 1 Peter 4:8:"Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins".
Is your love for God and people so hot and fervent that your enemy, satan can't mess with you?
We have talked recently about our enemy, satan coming to kill, steal and destroy our lives. For that to happen, he needs to find a weakness in our armor. Our spiritual armor is good and strong when we are hidden in Christ and loving Him and others fervently. It means we are naturally obedient to God and out of that love we are able to actively love others and walk in an attitude of forgiveness.
13. 2 Timothy 1:7: "for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control".
1 and 2 Timothy are written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy while he was incarcerated in a Roman jail - not very nice living conditions! Timothy was a young leader and Paul was his mentor. In these letters, Paul offers practical advice and encouragement to Timothy in his ministry. He may have been afraid due to all the persecution that the Christians were experiencing. He reminded him who he was in Christ to put some fight back into his spirit!
In our Bible study, we reflect on who we are in Christ and how through God's power we can choose faith over fear.
14. 1 John 4:8-10: "Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins".
God is love and when we know God, His love oozes right out of us onto others!
If we don't love, then we have not become acquainted with God.
But the flip side of that verse is that God's unique, sacrificial love flows out through us to others when we do know God and walk with Him as children of God.
How do I know that God loves me unconditionally?
God's love is a powerful and transformative force. If the previous 14 bible verses on God's unconditional love haven't quite persuaded you yet that God loves you intentionally and unconditionally, then the following 14 scriptures will!
(Scroll down to the bottom of this post to join us on a deep dive Bible study with guided questions to help you unpack these 'God is love' scriptures.)
15. Isaiah 54:10: God's unconditional love is a promise to you of His compassion.
For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
God's unconditional love is a promise to you of His compassion. His love is immovable. It was God's compassion for you that led Him to search for you and provide a way for you to have a relationship with Him via the way of the cross. And when you stay hidden in Him, you will have His peace in whatever storms come your way.
16. Psalm 86:15: God in His unconditional love is merciful and gracious!
"But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness."
God in His unconditional love is merciful and gracious!
This is such a beautiful bible verse. Look at the list of God's characteristics that are listed in it:
God is merciful.
God is gracious.
God is slow to anger.
God is abounding in love.
God is full of faithfulness.
That is a lot of God's character described in just one verse. Memorize it and hold on to it to keep you from veering off onto the wrong path.
God is so patient with us! He is a loving parent that desires us to have an abundant, and thriving life despite the errors we make or the wrong paths we choose to go on.
17. Zephaniah 3:17: God in His unconditional love rejoices over you!
"The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing."
God in His unconditional love rejoices over you!
The Lord your God is your savior and He rejoices over you with joy. In fact, He is so happy with you that He remembers your sin no more. (so if you have confessed your sin and you still feel guilty- stop it right now! You are loved and cherished by God!)
When this verse is translated into Hebrew it gives the most beautiful picture of how God sees us. It says that God literally "spins around" with joy over you and that He sings and shouts over you with joy. (There is more scripture treasure hidden in this verse and in our devotional Bible study we uncover it!)
18. 1 John 3:1: God loves you unconditionally and He allows you to call Him Daddy
"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him."
God loves you unconditionally and He allows you to call Him Daddy (Hebrew name of God- Abba)
God is our Daddy (Abba) and He wants us to climb up onto His lap in faith and snuggle with Him. The world won't recognize us as God's children if they don't know Him themselves.
19. Romans 8:1-4: the greatest love story of all time between us as believers in Jesus Christ and God!
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit."
Romans 8 is the greatest love story of all time between us as believers in Jesus Christ and God!
We are so loved! It is a divine mystery but one you need to investigate so that you can walk in an abundant and fruitful life that God has planned for you.
20. Romans 8:31-32: In God's unconditional love, we are accepted and chosen.
"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?"
In God's unconditional love, we are accepted and chosen. This means that God approved of you before anybody else ever got the chance to disapprove. So if God thinks that you are His amazing child, why should you worry about what anyone else thinks?
21. Deuteronomy 7:9: God in His unconditional love for you remains faithful.
"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations."
God in His unconditional love for you remains faithful.
Moses spoke this wonderful verse to the Israelites. Moses said that God is faithful for a thousand generations. A generation is about 50 years. So that would make 1000 generations approximately 50,000 years. That is a forever long time for God to be faithful to us!
22. Ephesians 3:17-19:Pray for your loved ones to know God's, unconditional love!
"...so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God".
Pray for your loved ones to know God's, unconditional love!
Paul wrote these beautiful bible verses as a prayer for the Christians in Ephesus. These verses are perfect to pray over friends and family. It is the most precious thing to pray that your loved ones grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ for them. I often pray for them for myself too!
23. Ephesians 1:5-6: God in His unconditional love for us desires to adopt us!
"He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved."
God in His unconditional love for us desires to adopt us!
I have noticed a pattern as we are studying bible verses about God's unconditional love for us.
The pattern is this:
God shows us His unconditional love by constantly showing us that He wants to adopt us as His children.
Why does God want to adopt us?
God is Holy. God is love and God created man because He wanted a relationship and fellowship with man. We are created to worship a loving, heavenly Father. But we are all naturally sinful and the only way to restore our relationship with God was for Him to send Jesus, His Son to die on the cross so that His blood could pay for our sins and bridge that gap between the holiness of God and us.
24. 1 Chronicles 16:34: God's unconditional love endures forever!
"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!"
God's unconditional love endures forever!
This verse records David's thankfulness to God. King David is known as a man after God's own heart. He loved God very much but he messed up big time! (We discuss David further in our Bible study). He truly knew God's mercy and steadfast love. That same mercy is extended to you too. God loves you. He is for you!
25. 1 John 4:7-8: Unconditional Love only comes from God
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God."
Here is our call to action! Let us continue to love one another because love comes from God. The love that comes from God is unconditional.
Maybe today is a good day to have a heart check?
Do you love people unconditionally? To be quite honest, I don't think that I do but I do yearn to love well.
26. Psalm 36:7: God's unconditional love is unfailing!
"How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings."
God's unconditional love is unfailing! God has loved you from the very beginning. He has always loved you and He will never stop loving you. This verse gives us a beautiful insight into the heart of God for us. This verse makes me think of a mother hen and her baby chickens!
Just as baby chickens find refuge in the shelter of the mother hen's wings, so we too can find refuge in the shelter of God.
27. Galatians 2:20: Because of the unconditional love of God you can live a powerful life
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Because of the unconditional love of God, you can live a powerful life!
Jesus Christ gave Himself for you so that you can live in the power of the Holy Spirit and become all that God has created you to be! You can ask the Holy Spirit to partner with you as you surrender the areas of your life that need to be changed by Him.
28. Romans 8:38-39: Nothing can separate you from the unconditional love of God!
"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord".
Nothing can separate you from the unconditional love of God!
Our verse today looks at God being present in our sufferings. Nothing, absolutely nothing can separate you from the love of God. (We go into more detail about what this verse means for you in your life in our devotional Bible study).

What the Bible says about God's unconditional love
I hope you have enjoyed learning what the Bible has to say about God's unconditional love.
But it is important to note that the Bible also teaches that God's love is accompanied by justice and righteousness. And there will be consequences for the actions we take in this life. But, that doesn't change the fact that God's love for us is indeed unconditional.
In conclusion, my dear friend, God's love for us is indeed unconditional. A love that is freely given, always present, and ready to embrace us no matter what. So, the next time you question God's love for you, just remember that His love for you is not based on anything you do, it's just there, always.
