Hey there, I'm so happy that you have landed on this page! I'm Karen from Scriptural Grace.

My passion is to help the body of Christ grow stronger in the Lord through prayer and Bible study.

If you are longing to grow closer to the Lord, these prayers to draw near to God will help you seek His presence and strengthen your relationship with Him.

One of the greatest desires of the Christian life is to experience the presence of God.

Yet many believers aren’t sure where to begin. They know they want to feel closer to the Lord, but they struggle to find the words to pray.

The good news is that Scripture promises us:

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8).

Prayer is the doorway into that promise.

Scripture repeatedly invites us to come close to the Lord. If you would like to explore more passages about this beautiful promise, you can read these powerful Bible verses about drawing near to God.

Below you’ll find powerful prayers to draw near to God, taken from my Presence of God Devotional Bible Study.

If you desire a deeper relationship with God, these prayers to draw near to God will help you seek His presence, surrender your burdens, and experience the peace that comes from walking closely with Him.

Why Prayer Helps Us Draw Near to God

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we experience closeness with God because it is how we personally respond to Him. While God speaks to us through His Word, prayer is how we speak back to Him—opening our hearts, sharing our burdens, and seeking His presence.

Prayer is not about saying perfect words or following a complicated formula. It is simply coming before the Lord with humility, honesty, and faith.

The Bible encourages us to approach God with confidence because of what Jesus has done for us:

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16

When we pray, we intentionally turn our attention away from distractions and toward the One who loves us. Prayer helps quiet our hearts so we can become aware of God’s presence and remember His faithfulness.

Prayer also helps remove the barriers that can distance us from God. When we confess our sins, surrender our worries, and thank Him for His goodness, our hearts become aligned with His will.

The prayers below are designed to help you slow down, seek the Lord, and draw near to Him intentionally. Whether you are beginning your day, spending time in quiet reflection, or longing to reconnect with God, these prayers can guide your heart back to His presence.

Prayers To Draw Near To God

In order to know God, you have to actively seek Him. James encourages us to draw near to God, to get closer to Him (James 4:8). Then he promises that as we draw near, God will respond by moving closer to us.

We are so incredibly blessed that God desires to come close to us!

Father, it is so wonderful to be encouraged to draw near to You. I can't comprehend how much you love me. I am so grateful that You have a good plan for my life and that You desire for me to come into Your presence. Forgive me for my sins. Show me anything that I need to repent of. Purify my heart and give me Your wisdom and strength not to be double-minded but to choose Your way and to live a godly, spirit-filled life, hidden in You. Amen.

Prayer to draw close to God and be delivered from your fears

King David was disciplined in regularly seeking God, and as soon as fear overcame him, he instantly sought the Lord, and David tells us in Psalm 34:4 that God did 2 things for him:

  • God answered David's prayer.

  • He delivered David from all his fears.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4.

One of the most powerful aspects of Psalm 34:4 is the assurance of God's deliverance from fear. Fear can be paralyzing, robbing us of joy and peace. But when we entrust our worries and anxieties to the Lord, He grants us the courage to face our fears with confidence.

Thank You, Father, that I can come to You at any time about anything. You love to bend down and listen to me! Help me to remember how loved I am by You and that I can safely place all my fears into Your hands. Help me to trust You with my problems and to leave them in Your care. Today I am most fearful about:_________. I lay this burden before You and ask that You will work on my behalf and fill me with Your faith, hope, and love. Amen.

We are instructed to call God, and He will answer!

God is patiently waiting for your call. In fact, He is expecting you to call at any time of the day. This is what Jeremiah 33:3 says:

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

God will answer you, but you need to seek the Lord and listen to His instruction. His solutions to our problems are way better than the ones we could have found on our own.

Thank you, Father, for instructing us to talk to You. Forgive me for my sins and show me anything that I need to repent of. Show me Your way, Your plans, Your solutions for all that concerns me. Help me to be patient while You work behind the scenes of my life and fill me with Your wisdom and discernment about all that I need to know about. Thank you Father that You know what lies ahead, that You have a good plan for my future, and that when I seek Your face, You will reveal to me the hidden things that I don't yet know. Amen.

Draw near to God in prayer, and you will find fullness of joy in His presence

God's plan for your life and mine includes joy! In the presence of God, there is fullness of joy. We are promised access to God's presence forevermore, and when you draw near to God, you will enjoy God's supernatural peace, gain His wisdom in different situations, and you will discover that in the presence of the Lord, there is fullness of joy.

You make known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11.

Father, in Your presence, there is fullness of joy. Forgive me for all that I have done that is not according to Your will. Keep reminding me that the path of life is being in Your presence. Thank You for filling me with Your supernatural joy and peace, and thank You that You correct my path when I stray from the one that You have planned for me. You will show me the path of life! Amen.

Prayer to come close to God, abide in Him - He is the True Vine

Jesus is the true vine, and we find the true source of life in Him. Have you ever seen fruit grow apart from the vine, tree, or plant to which it was attached?

No, of course not! It is impossible for that fruit to thrive or even stay alive.

It is the same for us in our walk with Christ. Unless we stay close to Him in His presence, we will not grow or bear His fruit.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

You won't regret taking the time to grow in Christ.

Father, thank you for calling me to be in Your presence. I am presenting myself for cultivation in You. Give me the grace to go through Your pruning process. I want to bear good fruit, I want to display Your glory to the world around me, and to bless the people in it with Your bounteous fruit. Amen.

Prayer for a deep desire to experience His presence

If you could ask God for only one thing, what would it be?

David's heart's desire was to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life and to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to know Him intimately.

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in his dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. Psalm 27:4-5.

God desires a relationship with you and me. Did you notice the reward that you receive when you 'dwell in the house of the Lord?'

"For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock." Psalm 27:5 ESV

God is our shelter, our secret retreat! When we dwell in Him, we are safe and secure. God will lift us up high upon a rock. When we seek His presence, we are in a position to hear God speak to our hearts. You will sense God's guidance and His direction.

Father, thank you so much for sending Jesus to die on the cross so that He paid the price for my sin. Now I can come into Your presence, to dwell in the house of the Lord and to gaze upon Your beauty.

Thank you for providing mercy and eternal life. Thank you that in my times of trouble, You will hide me in Your presence. You set my feet upon a high rock, and You will protect me through life's storms. When my passion for you dims, call me back to You. Don't let my heart grow cold. Fill me with such a deep yearning to seek Your presence and a desire to dwell in the house of the Lord and to gaze upon Your beauty. Amen.

Spending time with God in prayer is one of the most powerful ways we cultivate a deeper relationship with Him. As we seek His presence daily, our hearts become more aligned with His will and we begin to experience the joy and peace that come from walking closely with Him.

How Do You Draw Near to God Through Prayer?

Drawing near to God begins with intentionally turning your heart toward Him. Prayer helps us focus on the Lord, confess our sins, surrender our worries, and seek His guidance. As we come before God with humility and faith, we begin to experience the peace and closeness that come from spending time in His presence. The more consistently we seek Him through prayer and Scripture, the deeper our relationship with Him becomes.

What Does the Bible Say About Drawing Near to God?

The Bible repeatedly invites believers to come close to God. One of the most well-known verses is James 4:8, which says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” This promise reminds us that God welcomes those who sincerely seek Him. Throughout Scripture, we see that God desires a relationship with His people and invites them into His presence through prayer, worship, and obedience.

Can Prayer Help You Feel Closer to God?

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways to experience closeness with God. When we pray, we shift our attention away from distractions and focus our hearts on Him. As we bring our concerns, gratitude, and desires before the Lord, we become more aware of His presence and His faithfulness in our lives.

When Should You Pray to Draw Near to God?

You can pray to draw near to God at any time. Many people find it helpful to pray in the morning before beginning their day or in the evening as they reflect on what God has done. The important thing is not the exact time but the posture of your heart. God invites us to seek Him continually and promises that He will respond when we call upon Him.
