Sometimes life feels heavy. This past year has brought a lot of change in my life, in my home, in my family rhythms, and in church ministry. And if I’m honest, there have been moments when the knocks just seemed to keep coming. One thing after another. Another pressure. Another disappointment. Another reason to feel weary.
And sometimes, when discouragement keeps piling up, the thought comes to mind, maybe I should stop. Maybe I should stop writing Bible studies and prayer resources, stop showing up, and step away from the work God has placed in my hands. Not because I no longer care, but because the pressure, weariness, and spiritual resistance can make the calling feel heavier than I expected.
Maybe you have felt that too.
Maybe you are trying to follow God. You are trying to be faithful. You are doing your best to walk in the purpose He has placed before you. But instead of feeling encouraged, you feel resisted, weary, and defeated.
The truth is, when you begin using the gifts God has given you to serve Him, bless others, and walk in obedience, there can be pushback. The enemy loves to use discouragement, fear, exhaustion, and disappointment to try to pull us away from what God has called us to do.
But feeling defeated does not mean you are defeated.
God’s Word reminds us that we are not alone in the battle. He strengthens the weary, lifts up the discouraged, and helps His people keep going when they feel like they have nothing left.
Scripture does not tell us to pretend everything is fine. It invites us to bring our tired hearts to the Lord and let His truth renew our strength.

When you feel defeated, the Bible does not tell you to pretend everything is fine. God invites you to bring your weary, discouraged heart to Him.
Throughout Scripture, we see faithful people who felt overwhelmed, afraid, tired, and ready to give up. David cried out to God when his heart was overwhelmed. Elijah felt deeply discouraged. Paul wrote about being hard pressed, perplexed, and struck down.
Feeling weak does not mean you have failed.
The Bible reminds us that feeling defeated is not the same as being defeated.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” God does not move away from you when you feel crushed. He draws near. Psalm 34:18

1. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 — You may be hard pressed, but not destroyed
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9.
Paul knew what it was like to feel pressed on every side, yet he could still say he was not crushed, abandoned, or destroyed.
This verse reminds us that hardship may knock us down, but it does not get the final word. In Christ, you are not finished. God is still holding you and helping you rise again.
2. Psalm 73:26 — God Is the Strength of Your Heart
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26.
Sometimes your body feels tired, your emotions feel overwhelmed, and your confidence feels shaken. This verse reminds us that even when we feel weak, God remains our strength. He is the One who holds us steady when we feel like we have nothing left.
3. Micah 7:8 — When I Fall, I Will Rise
Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light. Micah 7:8.
Micah 7:8 is a powerful reminder that falling is not the end of your story. You may feel defeated for a moment, but God can lift you up again. The enemy does not get the final word over your life. God does.
4. Romans 8:37 — More Than Conquerors Through Christ
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:37.
This verse reminds us that our victory is not based on how strong we feel.
We are more than conquerors because of Christ’s love for us. Even when we feel weak, discouraged, or defeated, His love holds us securely.
5. Psalm 46:1 — God Is Our Refuge and Strength
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1.
When life feels uncertain or overwhelming, God is still a safe place to run to.
Psalm 46:1 reminds us that God is not far away in our trouble. He is our refuge, our strength, and our very present help when we need Him most.
Bible Verses For When You Feel Discouraged
When discouragement settles in, it can make everything feel worse than it actually is. This is why we need to get God's perspective. These Bible verses remind us that God is with us, goes before us, strengthens us, and gives us courage to keep walking with Him.
6. Joshua 1:9 — Be Strong and Courageous
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9.
God told Joshua to be strong and courageous as he stepped into a new and difficult calling.
This verse reminds us that courage is not based on feeling confident. We can be strong because God promises to be with us wherever we go.
7. Deuteronomy 31:8 — He Will Never Leave You
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8.
This verse reminds us that God goes before us.
Even when the path ahead feels uncertain, we do not walk it alone. God is already there, and He will never leave us or forsake us.
8. Isaiah 41:10 — Do Not Fear, For I Am With You
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10.
Isaiah 41:10 is one of the most comforting verses for discouragement.
God does not simply tell us not to fear. He promises His presence, His strength, His help, and His upholding hand.
9. Psalm 42:11 — Put Your Hope in God
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:11.
Sometimes we have to speak truth to our own discouraged souls. This verse reminds us to place our hope back in God, even when our emotions feel unsettled. He is still worthy of our praise, even in the waiting.
10. John 16:33 — Take Heart, Jesus Has Overcome the World
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33.
Jesus never promised that life would be free from trouble. But He did promise His peace, and He reminded us to take heart because He has overcome the world. Our hope is in our victorious Savior.
Bible Quotes About Not Giving Up
When you feel weary, it can be tempting to stop showing up, serving, praying, or doing the good work God has placed before you. These scriptures on not giving up remind us that God sees our faithfulness, even when the fruit is not visible yet.
11. Galatians 6:9 — Do Not Grow Weary in Doing Good
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9.
This is one of the clearest Bible verses about not giving up. God sees the seeds you are sowing, even when you cannot see the harvest yet. Keep doing good, keep trusting Him, and keep walking faithfully.
12. Hebrews 12:1-3 — Run With Endurance
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. The Christian life is often described as a race that requires endurance. This verse reminds us to fix our eyes on Jesus, not on our exhaustion. He endured the cross for us, and He gives us strength to keep going.
13. 1 Corinthians 15:58 — Your Labor Is Not in Vain
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58.
Sometimes faithfulness can feel hidden, unnoticed, or unfruitful.
But this verse reminds us that our labor in the Lord is never wasted. Even when you cannot see the results, God sees your obedience.
14. 2 Thessalonians 3:13 — Do Not Grow Weary in Doing Good
And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. 2 Thessalonians 3:13.
This verse encourages us to keep doing what is right. Even when it feels unnoticed or tiring, God calls us to continue in faithfulness. He sees what others may never see.
15. James 1:12 — Blessed Is the One Who Perseveres
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12.
Perseverance is not wasted in God’s hands. Through trials, God strengthens our faith and teaches us to endure. There is a blessing for the one who keeps trusting Him, even when the road is hard.
Never Give Up Bible Verses For When You Feel Weak
When you feel weak, “never give up” does not mean pushing forward in your own strength. It means leaning on the Lord, trusting His promises, and allowing Him to renew your heart when you feel like you have nothing left.
16. Isaiah 40:29-31 — God Gives Strength to the Weary
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31.

God gives strength to the weary and renews those who hope in Him. When you feel like you cannot keep going, He can lift you up and help you take the next step.
17. Philippians 4:13 — Strength Through Christ
I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13.
This verse is not about doing anything we want in our own power. It is about Christ strengthening us to endure faithfully. When you feel weak, He gives you the strength to keep trusting, keep obeying, and keep walking with Him.
18. 2 Timothy 1:7 — God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7.
Discouragement can make us feel afraid, timid, and unsure. But this verse reminds us that fear does not come from God. He gives us power, love, and self-control so we can keep walking in faith.
19. Psalm 31:24 — Be Strong and Take Heart
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24.
Waiting on the Lord can take courage.
This verse reminds us to be strong and take heart, not because life is easy, but because our hope is in the Lord. He strengthens those who wait for Him.
20. Proverbs 24:16 — The Righteous Rise Again
For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes. Proverbs 24:16.
Falling does not mean you have failed beyond repair. This verse reminds us that the righteous may fall, but they rise again. God is able to lift you, restore you, and help you keep going.

Not giving up does not mean you have to carry everything by yourself. Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is surrender the battle to the Lord and trust Him to fight for you.
21. Exodus 14:14 — The Lord Will Fight For You
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14.
When the Israelites stood between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army, there seemed to be no way forward. But God made a way where there was no way. This verse reminds us that sometimes we need to stop striving, be still, and trust that God is fighting for us.
22. 2 Chronicles 20:15 — The Battle Belongs to God
He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 2 Chronicles 20:15.
This verse is a powerful reminder that every battle is not ours to carry alone. When you feel discouraged, resisted, or spiritually weary, remember that the battle belongs to the Lord. You can surrender your fear and trust God to control the outcome.
23. Psalm 55:22 — Cast Your Burden on the Lord
Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken. Psalm 55:22.
God never asked you to carry the full weight by yourself. This verse invites you to cast your burden on Him. He is strong enough to hold what feels too heavy for your heart.
24. 1 Peter 5:7 — Cast Your Anxiety on Him
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7.
God cares about the things that are weighing on you. Nothing is too small, too messy, or too emotional to bring before Him. You can give Him your worries because His care for you is personal and faithful.
25. Romans 15:13 — Overflow With Hope
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13.
God does not only give us enough strength to survive. He fills us with joy, peace, and hope as we trust in Him. Even when life feels heavy, the Holy Spirit can renew your heart with hope that overflows.
Here is a fun note about this verse: I taught a song to our Sunday school kids with actions based on Romans 15:13. When we would sing it in church, one of the parents would start weeping and ask me what was so special about this kids' song. I told him, " It's pure scripture, and the Holy Spirit is revealing Himself to you!"
Bible Verses For When You Are Tired, Weary, and Burdened
Sometimes discouragement is just you feeling exhausted. You feel tired from carrying so much, weary from waiting, and burdened by things you cannot fix on your own. The following Bible verses remind us that Jesus invites us to come to Him and find rest.
26. Matthew 11:28-30 — Come to Me, All Who Are Weary
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.
Jesus does not tell the weary to pretend they are strong. He invites them to come to Him. When your heart feels tired and heavy, you can bring your burdens to Jesus and receive the rest only He can give.
27. Lamentations 3:22-24 — His Mercies Are New Every Morning
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” Lamentations 3:22-24.
Yesterday’s pain does not cancel today’s mercy. This verse reminds us that God’s compassion has not run out. Each morning is a fresh opportunity to receive His faithfulness and keep trusting Him.
28. Psalm 27:13-14 — Wait for the Lord
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:13-14.
David believed he would see the goodness of the Lord, even while he was still waiting.
This verse reminds us to take heart when the answer has not come yet. Waiting on God is not wasted when our hope is in Him.
29. 1 Peter 5:10 — God Will Restore, Confirm, Strengthen, and Establish You
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 1 Peter 5:10.
Suffering is not the end of your story. This verse reminds us that God Himself restores and strengthens His people. What feels broken, weary, or shaken can be made steady again in His hands.
A Prayer For When You Feel Defeated And Want To Give Up
Heavenly Father,I praise You because You are my refuge and strength, my very present help in trouble. You are close to the brokenhearted, and You save those who are crushed in spirit. Thank You that when I feel weak, weary, and defeated, You do not move away from me. You draw near.
Lord, I confess that I have felt discouraged and tempted to give up. Sometimes I have focused more on the battle than on Your presence. I have tried to carry burdens You never asked me to carry alone. Forgive me for the times I have allowed fear, exhaustion, or disappointment to quiet my faith.
Thank You, Lord, that You fight for me and that I do not face this battle alone. Thank You that You give strength to the weary and power to the weak. Thank You that even when I fall, You can lift me up again. Thank You that my labor in You is not in vain.
Father, please strengthen my heart today. Help me not to grow weary in doing good. Teach me to cast my burdens and anxieties on You because You care for me. Renew my hope, steady my mind, and help me fix my eyes on Jesus. When I feel like giving up, remind me that You are with me, You are holding me, and this is not the end of my story.

How To Use These Bible Verses When You Feel Like Giving Up
When you feel defeated, it can be hard to know where to begin. You may not feel like reading a long passage of scripture or praying a long prayer. That is okay. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is take one verse, sit with it, and let God use His Word to steady your heart.
Here are a few simple ways to use these scriptures when you feel discouraged or tempted to give up:
Write one verse in your journal each morning. Choose one Bible verse and write it slowly. As you write, ask God to help you believe His truth more than your feelings.
Pray the verse back to God. Turn the scripture into a personal prayer. For example, if you are reading Psalm 46:1, you could pray, “Lord, be my refuge and strength today. Help me remember that You are present in this trouble.”
Choose one anchor verse for the week. Pick one verse that speaks directly to your situation and return to it often. Write it somewhere you will see it, such as your journal, planner, phone lock screen, or bathroom mirror.
Speak the verse out loud when discouragement rises. When your thoughts feel heavy, speak God’s truth over your heart. Scripture helps you fight lies with truth and reminds you that God is still with you.
Pair scripture reading with worship and prayer. Take a few minutes to read the verse, listen to a worship song, and sit quietly with the Lord. You do not have to rush. Let God’s presence minister to your weary heart. You can also ask yourself these two simple questions as you read:
What truth about God does this verse reveal? Does it show you that God is near, faithful, strong, compassionate, or able to fight for you?
What burden do I need to surrender today? Is there a fear, disappointment, pressure, or outcome you need to place back into God’s hands?
You do not have to use all these verses at once. Start with one. Let it become a prayer, a reminder, and an anchor for your heart as God strengthens you one step at a time.

Feeling Defeated Is Not the Same As Being Defeated

Feeling defeated can be painful, exhausting, and lonely. But it is important to remember that how you feel today is not the final word over your life.
You may feel tired, but God is not tired.
You may feel weak, but God’s strength has not run out.
