Iatros-Physician

"the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” Matthew 11:5.

Pronouncing The Hebrew Name of God - Iatros: ee-TROS

This is Day 29 of a 30 Day study on The Names Of God. If you haven't read the introduction yet, please start HERE

What does the Bible say about the Name Of God, Iatros-Physician:

The best place to start when examining what the Bible says about Jesus being our Iatros-Physician is in the book of Matthew and Luke.

John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, 3 “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”

4 Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen— 5 the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

And this is what it says in Luke 4:16-24

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”

20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

22 Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

23 Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’ 24 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.

The Jewish people already believed in God as their healer and we explored the name of God, "Yahweh Rapha" HERE . They followed laws that included hygienic practices that contributed to their health. Also according to the Talmud, an authoritative collection of Jewish writings, every city had its own doctor who was licensed by city officials. So why did Jesus stand out during His time ministering to the people in Israel?

Jesus The Physician

Despite the physicians that were there, they could not perform the miracles that Jesus did. We read yesterday about Jesus being Immanuel (read it HERE), which means God with us. God, Himself is all-powerful and His word has the power to heal. Jesus is the "God-Man", the Great Physician, Iatros.

Now consider this, when you surrender your life to God and you have a living relationship with Him, Then Jesus is living in you. So we too need to show Jesus to the people we meet. We need to pray with expectant faith for one another for healing from the most awful afflictions around us. We live in a fallen world, full of sin that leads to illness and even death.

But let me encourage you that I have witnessed miracles. My back has been healed. I had a minor accident during my time as a nurse which resulted in a trapped nerve and awful pain which I have been known to faint from (not fun!). It tries to revisit me but I keep telling the pain that Jesus paid the price for it on the cross and by His stripes, I am healed! The pain goes!

My husband is a clergyman and through this role, we have had the privilege to pray with many people. We have seen many get better but we have also witnessed some that have left us behind and gone on to be with Jesus in glory.

That hurts! But it doesn't matter what denomination of church you belong to, and what it believes. What matters is what scripture says and to remember that you are truly loved by the King of kings. God has a good plan for your life.

Scriptures for the sick and healing

When you pray for healing for yourself or others, remember that God never sends sickness, though He sometimes allows us to become sick. Scripture sees sickness and death as by-products of sin and we sure do live in a fallen world!

There is power in prayer and when you pray Scripture back to God, you are praying His words back to Him. That makes it a powerful prayer and it is perfect to use when you don't have the words to pray. Don't worry if you don't know what to pray, the Holy Spirit has promised to help you pray!

Romans 8:26-27

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 9 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers.
