Waiting on God is not always easy. When prayers seem unanswered, doors stay closed, or life feels uncertain, it can be tempting to rush ahead or grow discouraged. But Scripture reminds us that waiting on the Lord is never wasted. God is faithful, His timing is perfect, and He strengthens those who trust Him. These 31 waiting-on-God Bible verses will encourage your heart to be still, hold on to hope, and keep trusting Him as you wait.
Waiting On God Bible Verses
Waiting is hard! Waiting for God's promises to manifest in our lives is difficult. Well, I find it difficult. Those characteristic traits of impatience and my tendency to worry and feel discouraged are displayed in all their glory for everyone to see during these 'waiting times'. Can you relate to that?
But, this month, during this pandemic...I'm changing my ways! I'm going to immerse myself in 31 portions of scripture for 31 days to see what God says about 'waiting times' and I'm hoping you will join me in this journey too!
We will explore scripture to see what God has to say about the benefits of waiting on God, and how to pray while you are waiting on Him.
We will start off this scripture reading/writing plan with the verse Jeremiah 29:11.
It says "For I know the plans. I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Did you know that your presence on earth is not a chance occurrence in the universe?
God's word says in Psalm 139:16 in the Amplified translation, " Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your Book all the days of my life were written before they ever took shape, when as yet there was none of them".
No, your life is not an accident. The Lord planted you on this earth for such a time as this. We will be looking at another famous verse, Esther 4:14, in our scripture plan in a few days. We will consider the truth that you are alive and breathing right now because God has called you to this specific time in history.
Waiting on God Bible Verses
There are some exciting Bible verses we will explore about the benefits of waiting on God as we spend time in His presence, with a listening ear for His specific instructions and directions for your life. We will be looking at Joshua and the scary, exciting directions he was given as a leader of the Israelites to conquer an impenetrable city.
What can you do while you are waiting on God?
Scripture gives us some advice and I will list some of them below. You will find the remainder of the 31 Waiting On God Bible verses in the printable available in our Free Resource Library.
Wait for God expectantly - Micah 7:7.
"But as for me, I will look expectantly for the Lord and with confidence in Him I will keep watch; I will wait [with confident expectation] for the God of my salvation.
My God will hear me."
When you wait expectantly, it instills hope in your heart and soul, believing that your answer is just around the corner.
Put your hope in God's word - Psalm 130:5-6.
"I wait [patiently] for the Lord, my soul [expectantly] waits, And in His word do I hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning; More than the watchmen for the morning."
Trust in the Lord and not in your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6.
"Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, and He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]."
Be patient - Psalm 40:1-3.
" I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of a horrible pit [of tumult and of destruction], out of the miry clay, and He set my feet upon a rock, steadying my footsteps and establishing my path. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear [with great reverence] and will trust confidently in the Lord."
Be strong and courageous and fight the feeling of worry and fear- Galatians 6:9
" Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in."
Trust in God's goodness. God's goodness is promised to those who wait patiently for Him. Even if everything looks hopeless - hang on prayerfully and remember what Ephesians 3:20 says
" God is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to His power at work within us".
Be persistent in prayer - pray fervently and with an attitude of thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2,
"Be persistent and devoted to prayer, being alert and focused in your prayer life with an attitude of thanksgiving.
Here is our list of 31 Bible verses on Waiting On God:
Let's talk about how to benefit from this list of scriptures. I find that writing them out allows you time to learn them and think on them more deeply. I have some pretty journal cards and stationery with prompts to help you during your devotional time. It should take about 10 minutes to write each verse, but spend as much time as you have sitting in God's presence and listening for His Holy Spirit to speak to your heart, instructing and guiding you.
Copying scripture and carrying it with us throughout the day, reading it and memorizing it, makes God's word a part of us. It renews your mind and calms your anxious heart.
I have been trying something new during my own devotional time with the Lord, and it has changed me! I am more content and expectant of what God will transform in my life. I have been highlighting the list of these waiting scriptures in my Bible, adding a small page marker that peeps out the side, and when I am frustrated in my 'waiting season', I follow all those tabs and pray through the scriptures!
Take Action :
Download the scripture verse list, journal paper, and the pretty Bible verse print HERE.
Find a quiet place with your cup of coffee, Bible, and a favorite pen.
Pray as you write your scripture verse for that day.
Ask God to reveal Himself to you and listen for the Holy Spirit to speak to you.
If you feel convicted of something, confess it and ask for forgiveness.
If you feel moved to worship - worship God! Just enjoy His presence.
Most important: make an appointment with yourself, journal, and God every day for your scripture writing time. I find it works best for me to do it in the morning. It helps me to gain ' God's perspective' on my day. But you do it in your own perfect time. The important thing to remember is to do it, and if you miss a day, just double up the next one!
