Start Holy Week With Purpose
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week—a sacred journey that leads us from the streets of Jerusalem to the foot of the cross and, finally, to the empty tomb.
It’s a day filled with praise and prophecy, celebration and sorrow. And it invites us to prepare our hearts for what’s to come.
Today’s Palm Sunday devotional is taken from Day 36 of my Lent & Easter devotional study, Redeemed by the Cross—available now on Amazon and as a downloadable PDF version.

Palm Sunday Devotional
The King Has Come!
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” Matthew 21:1-11.
Background:
We have arrived at Holy Week!
The past 35 days have prepared our hearts for this sacred journey.
Today is Palm Sunday, the day Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
The crowds welcomed Him as King, but they didn’t fully understand the kind of King He was.
Let’s step into this moment and imagine being part of the crowd.
The Triumphal Entry
“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
(Matthew 21:9)
Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey—fulfilling Zechariah 9:9, a prophecy about the Messiah coming in peace.
The people waved palm branches and shouted praises, expecting Him to overthrow Rome and become their earthly king.
But Jesus’s kingdom was not of this world—He came to bring salvation, not war.
The same crowd that shouted ‘Hosanna’ on Sunday would soon shout ‘Crucify Him’ on Friday.

What Palm Sunday Teaches Us
Jesus is the King we need, not always the King we expect.
God’s plan often looks different from our expectations.
Our response to Jesus should be one of faith, not just excitement.
Consider this :
Are you welcoming Jesus as King of your life today?
Do you worship Jesus for who He is, or only when He meets your expectations?
Lent And Easter Journey
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Jesus’s final journey to the cross.
Monday: Jesus cleanses the Temple.
Tuesday-Wednesday: Jesus teaches in Jerusalem.
Thursday: The Last Supper.
Friday: The Crucifixion.
Saturday: The silence of the tomb.
Sunday: Victory—Jesus is alive!
This week, slow down and reflect on each step Jesus took for you.
Challenge
Spend time today worshiping Jesus as King.
Read Matthew 21:1-11 and picture yourself in the crowd.
Write a prayer of surrender—welcoming Jesus as Lord of every part of your life.
Sing a worship song that declares Jesus as King (e.g., Hosanna).
Prayer
Jesus, I welcome You as King—not just of the world, but of my life. Help me to worship You in truth, not just in moments of excitement but in deep surrender. As I enter Holy Week, open my heart to understand the depth of Your love and the sacrifice You made for me.
Hosanna in the highest! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
