January does something to us. It feels like a fresh page, a clean start, and a quiet pressure to “get it right.” New routines, new goals, new plans… and sometimes the weight of last year still clings on.
If you’ve been craving a simple way to begin the year with God—not perfect, not complicated, just sincere—this January prayer is for you.
In this post, I’m sharing:
A Prayer for January you can pray at the start of the month (or anytime you need a reset)
The Scriptures behind it (Isaiah 6:3, Proverbs 16:18, 2 Corinthians 5:17)
And what’s inside my January Prayer Journal, which is part of the 365-Day Prayer Challenge—a guided way to help you pray consistently for yourself, your family, your church, and the world.
Why start a new Prayer routine in January?
Why should you start a new prayer routine in January?
Because January is the perfect time to return to the foundations:
Adoration — remembering who God is: holy, majestic, worthy of our worship
Humility — releasing self-reliance and asking God to lead
New beginnings — stepping into the year, inviting Christ into every area of your life
And that’s exactly what this prayer will help you do: start your year looking up at God’s greatness, laying down what needs to be surrendered, and walking forward with fresh hope.
If you’d like daily structure—so you’re never stuck wondering what to pray—my digital January Prayer Journal guides you day by day, and the 365-Day Prayer Challenge helps you keep going all year long.
Prayer For January

If you don’t know where to start in prayer this month, start here. You can pray this at the beginning of January, come back to it each week, or use it anytime you need a spiritual reset—when you feel anxious, distracted, or like you’ve been doing life in your own strength.
January Prayer
Heavenly Father,
As I begin this new year, I lift my heart in adoration to You. You are holy, holy, holy—the Almighty God whose glory fills the entire earth. There is no one like You, Lord, majestic in splendor and perfect in all Your ways. I stand in awe of Your power, wisdom, and love that hold all creation together. You are worthy of all praise, and I exalt You as King over my life and this year.
Lord, I humbly come before You, acknowledging the pride and self-reliance that have crept into my heart at times. Forgive me for the moments I have sought my own way instead of Yours, for the times I have let my spirit grow haughty rather than submitted to Your leading. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Help me to walk in humility, depending on You in every area of my life.
Thank You, Lord, for the gift of new beginnings. Because of Christ, I am a new creation—my old life is gone, and I step into this year with a fresh start. Thank You for Your mercy that allows me to leave the past behind and embrace the future with hope. Thank You for walking with me every step of the way, for Your steadfast love and faithfulness that never fail. I am so grateful for the work You are doing in me, transforming me to reflect Your glory.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Isaiah 6:3, Proverbs 16:18, 2 Corinthians 5:17.
How to Pray This in 5 Minutes a Day (Simple ACTS Rhythm)
If long prayer times feel unrealistic right now, don’t overcomplicate it. Consistency usually comes from simplicity, not intensity. This is a quick daily rhythm you can use all January—especially on busy mornings.
A 5-minute January prayer routine (ACTS)
A — Adoration (1 minute) Start by worshiping God for who He is. Pray: “Lord, You are holy. You are good. You are faithful. You are over this year.”
C — Confession (1 minute) Bring your heart honestly before Him. Pray: “Father, forgive me for where I’ve been relying on myself. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.”
T — Thanksgiving (1 minute)Thank God for grace and new beginnings. Pray: “Thank You for mercy that is new. Thank You that in Christ I am a new creation. Thank You for walking with me.”
S — Supplication (2 minutes) Talk to God simply about what is weighing on your heart.
