Stress and anxiety can wear you down. You may be trying to trust God, but your thoughts keep racing, your body feels tense, and your heart feels unsettled. Sometimes you know what Scripture says, but you still need to come back to God’s promises again and again.

The Bible does not shame us for feeling overwhelmed. In fact, the Psalms are full of honest prayers from people who were afraid, weary, troubled, and in need of God’s help. They show us that we can bring our anxious thoughts to the Lord rather than pretend we are fine.

These Bible verses for stress and anxiety are here to help you slow down, breathe, and remember what is true. God is near. He cares for you. He is able to sustain you. And even when your circumstances do not change straight away, His Word can steady your heart and lead you back into His peace.

If you are walking through a season of anxiety, you may also find it helpful to spend more time in the Psalms. The Psalms give us honest words for fear, worry, weariness, and hope. They remind us that we can bring our anxious thoughts to God and find refuge in His presence.

I created my Psalms Bible Study for Anxious Women to help you do just that — slow down, pray through Scripture, and let God’s Word steady your heart.

Bible Verses for Stress and Anxiety

When you are feeling anxious, it can be hard to know where to begin. Sometimes you need a verse to pray. Sometimes you need a reminder that God is near. Sometimes you need to remember that your fear does not have to lead you.

These Bible verses for stress and anxiety can help you bring your worries honestly before the Lord and remember the truth of His Word.

1. Philippians 4:6-7 — When your thoughts are anxious

Philippians 4:6-7 is one of the most well-known Bible passages about anxiety. It reminds us that we do not have to carry our worries alone.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

God invites us to bring everything to Him in prayer. This does not mean we will never feel anxious. It means anxiety is not where we have to stay. We can bring our requests, fears, and burdens to the Lord, trusting that His peace can guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

When your thoughts are racing, this verse reminds you to pause and pray. God’s peace may not always come with instant answers, but His presence can steady your heart.

2. 1 Peter 5:7 — When you need to remember God cares

1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast our anxieties on God because He cares for us.

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7.

We are not told to give our worries to a distant God who is uninterested in our pain. We are invited to cast our cares on the Lord because He sees us, knows us, and cares deeply for us.

Anxiety can make you feel like everything depends on you. But 1 Peter 5:7 reminds you that you have a Father who is willing to carry what is too heavy for you.

3. Psalm 94:19 — When anxious thoughts multiply

Psalm 94:19 is a beautiful verse for the woman whose mind feels crowded with worry. The psalmist does not pretend his thoughts are calm. He speaks honestly about having many cares within his heart.

When anxiety was great within me,  your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:19

But the psalmist also testifies that God’s comfort brought joy to his soul. This is why the Psalms are such a gift when we are anxious. They give us honest words for real emotions. They show us that we can come to God with troubled thoughts and still find comfort in His presence.

4. Matthew 11:28-30 — When you feel weary and burdened

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.

This is such a tender invitation. Jesus does not tell the weary to try harder, pull themselves together, or pretend they are fine. He says, “Come to me.”

Stress and anxiety can leave you feeling exhausted in your body, mind, and spirit. But Jesus offers rest for your soul. Not the shallow kind of rest that depends on everything being fixed, but the deeper rest of being held by Him.

5. Isaiah 41:10 — When fear feels stronger than faith

Isaiah 41:10 reminds God’s people not to fear because He is with them. He promises to strengthen, help, and uphold them.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10

This is a powerful verse for anxious days because it gives us the reason we do not have to be ruled by fear: God is with us.

You may still feel weak. You may still feel unsure. But you are not facing your fear alone. The Lord is near, and He is able to hold you steady.

6. John 14:27 — When you need the peace of Jesus

In John 14:27, Jesus tells His disciples that He gives them His peace.

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27.

The peace Jesus gives is different from the peace the world offers. The world often tells us we can only have peace when life is calm, plans are certain, and problems are solved. But Jesus gives peace even in troubled circumstances.

This verse is a reminder that your heart does not have to be completely ruled by fear. Christ’s peace is real, steady, and deeper than what is happening around you.

7. Psalm 23:1-3 — When your soul needs restoring

Psalm 23 reminds us that the Lord is our Shepherd. He leads, provides, restores, and stays near.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:1-3.

When you are stressed or anxious, it can feel like your soul is worn thin. Psalm 23 gives us the picture of a Shepherd who knows what His sheep need. He does not drive them harshly. He leads them gently.

This Psalm reminds us that God is not only concerned with what we are doing. He cares about the condition of our souls. He is able to restore what anxiety has worn down.

Related: Psalm 23 also points us to one of the beautiful names of God: Yahweh Roi, meaning The Lord Is My Shepherd. If this verse encouraged you, you can read more about this name of God and what it teaches us about His care, guidance, and protection here: Yahweh Roi — The Lord Is My Shepherd.

8. Psalm 46:1 — When life feels unstable

Psalm 46:1 tells us that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1.

This verse is such a comfort when life feels uncertain. God is not distant from His people when trouble comes. He is near, He is strong, and He is able to help us right where we are.

When stress leaves you feeling overwhelmed, Psalm 46:1 reminds you that God Himself is your refuge. You can run to Him, lean on Him, and rest in His faithful care.

9. Psalm 56:3 — When fear rises suddenly

Psalm 56:3 is simple and honest: when the psalmist is afraid, he chooses to trust in God.

But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3.

This verse does not deny fear. It gives us something to do with it. When fear rises, we can turn our hearts toward the Lord and choose to place our trust in Him again.

Sometimes trusting God looks like one small prayer in the middle of an anxious moment: “Lord, I am afraid, but I trust You.” There have been many times in my own life when I caught myself falling headlong into an anxiety attack, when I suddenly remembered Psalm 56:3 and said, "No" to anxiety and chose to trust God to work out the situation. And He did work it out!

10. Psalm 55:22 — When your burden feels too heavy

Psalm 55:22 tells us to cast our burden on the Lord, and He will sustain us.

Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22.

This is a comforting promise for stressful seasons. God does not ask us to pretend our burdens are light. He invites us to give them to Him and He will take care of us. Even when we feel weak or unsteady, God is able to hold us up. He gives strength for today, grace for the next step, and peace as we learn to rely on Him.

11. Matthew 6:34 — When you are worried about tomorrow

Matthew 6:34 reminds us not to worry about tomorrow, because each day has enough trouble of its own.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34.

This verse speaks to the way anxiety often pulls us into the future. We start carrying tomorrow’s concerns before we have even finished today.

Jesus gently calls us back to the present. God gives grace for today. He will still be faithful tomorrow.

12. Psalm 121:1-2 — When you need to remember where your help comes from

Psalm 121 reminds us to lift our eyes to the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2.

Anxiety often makes us look inward at our own strength or outward at everything that could go wrong. But this Psalm lifts our eyes higher. Our help comes from the Lord.

The One who watches over you is not weak, distracted, or unaware. He is your Keeper, and He does not sleep.

13. Proverbs 12:25 — When anxiety weighs down your heart

Proverbs 12:25 is very honest about what anxiety can do. It says anxiety weighs down the heart.

Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. Proverbs 12:25.

Many of us know what that feels like — the heaviness, the tension, the way worry can drain our peace and energy.

But the verse also reminds us of the power of a good word. A kind, timely word can bring encouragement to a weary heart. Sometimes God comforts us through Scripture, and sometimes He uses the gentle words of another person to remind us that we are not alone.

When anxiety feels heavy, this verse encourages us to bring our hearts to God and also to receive the comfort He may send through His Word and through the people He places around us.

14. Lamentations 3:22-24 — When you wake up anxious

Lamentations 3 reminds us that God’s mercies are new every morning.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” Lamentations 3:22-24.

This is a beautiful passage for anxious mornings. Sometimes you wake up and the worries are already there. But before you face the day, God’s mercy is already waiting for you.

His faithfulness is not exhausted. His compassion has not run out. You can begin again with Him today.

15. Romans 8:38-39 — When anxiety makes you feel insecure

Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39.

Anxiety can make you feel unsafe, forgotten, or uncertain. But this passage anchors your heart in the unchanging love of God.

Your feelings may rise and fall. Your circumstances may change. But the love of God in Christ is secure. You are held by a love that anxiety cannot undo.

How to Use These Bible Verses for Stress and Anxiety

When you are feeling anxious, you do not have to rush through these verses. Choose one Scripture and sit with it for a few minutes. Read it slowly. Notice what it teaches you about God. Then turn it into a simple prayer.

You may want to write the verse down, keep it beside your bed, place it somewhere you will see it during the day, or memorize a short phrase to repeat when your thoughts begin to race.

God’s Word is not just information for your mind. It is truth for your heart. These verses on stress and anxiety can help you return to what is steady when your emotions feel unsettled.

Finding Comfort in the Psalms

Final Thoughts on Bible Verses for Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can feel heavy, but you do not have to carry them alone. God invites you to bring your burdens to Him. He is near to the brokenhearted, faithful in trouble, and able to give peace that is deeper than your circumstances.

These Bible verses for stress and anxiety are reminders to return to again and again. When your thoughts are racing, God is still steady. When your heart feels overwhelmed, He is still your refuge. When you feel weak, He can sustain you.

Take one verse with you today. Pray it slowly. Let it remind you that the Lord sees you, cares for you, and will not leave you to face your anxious thoughts alone.

A Prayer for Stress and Anxiety

Lord, You know the worries I am carrying today. You see the thoughts that feel heavy and the places in my heart that feel unsettled. Help me bring my burdens to You instead of trying to carry them on my own.

Thank You for being near, faithful, and full of compassion. Steady my heart with Your Word. Teach me to trust You one step at a time, and help me rest in Your care.

Amen.
