What does surrendering to God mean?

If you are reading this post, then you may have asked yourself 'What does surrendering to God mean?' and a more important question, 'How do you surrender your problems to God?'

This scripture reading/writing plan has 30 bible verses about surrendering to God. As you daily read and write them out and dive into our daily devotionals, you will be encouraged to trust God and surrender everything to Him.

So what does it exactly mean to surrender to God?

How do we surrender to Him?

Oswald Chambers has defined it perfectly in his classic devotional, My Utmost For His Highest.

This is what he says:

"True surrender is not simply to surrender of our external life but surrender of our will— and once that is done, surrender is complete. The greatest crisis we ever face is the surrender of our will. Yet God never forces a person’s will into surrender, and He never begs. He patiently waits until that person willingly yields to Him. And once that battle has been fought, it never needs to be fought again."

How do you surrender to God and let go?

You do this first by asking God to come into your life and to take control of it. You need to ask for forgiveness for the sins you know that you have done and for those that you aren't aware of. Then you need to ask God to show you where change is needed. The first few bible verses in our bible plan will be looking at this aspect of our lives. Don't forget to join us in our daily devotionals as we go deeper into each verse.

To be completely honest, surrendering to God is a life long endeavor and adventure! But there are such great rewards for surrendering your whole life to God. You will exchange stress for peace, sorrow for joy, beauty for ashes. You will learn to hear God's voice guiding you in different situations. Surrendering to God is saying that you trust Him with your life, with your family, and with all that concerns you.

How do you surrender to God?

Here are a few examples of how you can surrender your life to God:

  1. Seeking God as soon as your feet hit the floor. Welcome Him into your day Ask God to guide you and to sharpen your ears for His words that He will speak to your heart throughout your day. This is called ' Practicing God's Presence.' It is important to have 10 minutes or more a day dedicated to prayer and bible study but pray your way through the day too!

  2. Obeying God: As you read scripture and spend time in God's presence, you will know where things in your life don't match up to what you are reading. You will find that the Holy Spirit will make you uncomfortable about something. That is God highlighting something that you need to take note of and change. So if you feel guilty of something, give it to God and ask Him to renew your mind with the bible verses that you are reading and to fill you with His confidence as you resist wrong thinking and wrongdoing and do all that God tells you to do.

  3. Trusting God: It is hard to let go and trust God but He cares for you and He has the wisdom to direct you in the way that you should go - so it is a good plan to trust Him! We will be looking at the benefits of trusting God through the bible verses in our bible plan and our daily devotionals.

  4. Knowing who you are in Christ: This is another way to surrender your life totally to God. We will explore this area too in our bible verses this month. If you would like to do a separate study on who you are in Christ, you can look at this bible plan here. We studied this topic already in our daily devotionals and you can search the group for them here. You need to know who God says you are. The more that you explore these truths in the bible, the more your mind is renewed.

Let's talk about how to benefit from this list of scriptures:

I find that writing them out, allows you time to learn them and think about them more deeply. I have some pretty journal stationary with prompts to help you during your devotional time. It should take about 10 minutes to write each verse but spend as much time as you have, sitting in God's presence and listening for His Holy Spirit speaking to your heart, instructing, and guiding you.

Copying scripture and carrying it with us throughout the day, reading it and memorizing it, makes God's word a part of us. It renews your mind and calms your anxious heart.

Take Action :

  1. Download the scripture verse list, journal paper HERE.

  2. Find a quiet place with your cup of coffee, Bible, and a favorite pen.

  3. Pray as you write your scripture verse for that day.

  4. Ask God to reveal Himself to you and listen for the Holy Spirit to speak to you.

  5. If you feel convicted of something- confess it and ask for forgiveness.

  6. If you feel moved to worship - worship God! Just enjoy His presence.

  7. Most important: make an appointment with yourself, journal, and God every day for your scripture writing time. I find it works best for me to do it in the morning. It helps me to gain ' God's perspective' on my day. But you do it in your own perfect time. The important thing to remember is to do it and if you miss a day - just double up the next one!

We will be using these bible verses in the month of September as our daily devotionals in our Restoring Beauty For Ashes Facebook Group. Come join us there!
